The primary sources are the actual exchange lists from the National Archives. There were four exchanges from Ford, July 64, October 64, February 65 and May 65. There was one exchange from Groce in December 64, although offically broken into two groups three days apart. Vicki Betts and I received a grant to spend 8 working days in the National Archives with a target of gathering everything possible on Tyler and Smith County in CW and reconstruction. We got a lot of material. Once I had the lists on microfilm, I made hard copies and started entering data. From there we had a complete list of units, and then started seconday work on regimental histories, etc, to verify names, spellings, etc. Additionally, the QM department had published "Rolls of Honor" of deceased soldiers, for which there were two listings from Ford, although for the most part they were horrible, with a lot of duplicaitons and misspellings. We also found one volume of prisoners who escaped and made it back to union lines, although it was incomplete. There was an additional list of deceased prisoners in the GAR newpaper in the 1870's that was better than the QM list. So, to sum up it is a composite, with the vast percentage being from the Exchange lists.

Abbreviations, Status: "E" = exchanged, "D" = deceased, "?" is unverified. Source "EL" is exchange lists, and the number is the microfilm frame number which helped for verification when I was entering the data, and gives me the ability to check things. "RH" is regimental history, IF they could not sign their name on the lists, I simply marked them as being illiterate. How many were too sick or how many simply could not write, I don't know, but the NEw Hampshire Cavalry had twenty out of 53 who "made their mark" on the rolls.
