48th OVI Rosters

From the
Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio in the War of the Rebellion, 1861-1866

The following rosters were hand-keyed by volunteers. Our heartfelt thanks go out to each and every one of them for the many hours of tedium they spent typing them in. If you make use of one of these rosters, please send an email to the person who keyed the roster that interested you. (Click on their name below to send an email.) Your messages of thanks will go a long way toward repaying them for a lot of very hard work!

The rosters are provided in two formats. The HTML format is the easiest to view on the browser screen, however it takes longer to load and does not work well for printing. The alternative format provided is a PDF file. For this you will need to download and install a free copy of the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Note that the HTML versions will take 20-30 seconds to render in most browsers even after the file has completed downloading (the screen will be blank during that time.) The PDF versions are segmented for 8.5 x 11 printing - so you will need to tape the output together to create the entire spreadsheet width.

FORTY-EIGHTH REGIMENT OHIO VOLUNTEER INFANTRY,

THREE YEARS' SERVICE

This Regiment was organized in the State of Ohio, at large, from September to December, 1861, to serve three years. On July 24, 1865, a Battalion of six companies was organized by the consolidation of the 83rd and 114th Regiments.

Two companies, E and F, were mustered out October 14, 1865, by reason of expiration of term of service. The remaining four companies, A, B, C and D, were retained in service until May 9, 1866, when they were mustered out in accordance with orders from the War Department.

Regimental Band of the 48th OVI

The origin of the 48th OVI Regimental Band is not well documented but the fact that 13 of 17 Musicians transferred from Brown' County's Company G indicates that a preexisting band in Brown County Ohio may have enlisted together. A record that Jared Cooper was Drum Major in the 48th OVI and that he was in Company G, sent in by Sharon Schwartz, indicates that there may have been other musicians in addition to those on the roster.

The regimental history tells us that "At considerable expense, silver cornet instruments were purchased for the Band, which had been recruited for the Regiment" and that on April 6, at the very beginning of the Battle of Shiloh, "The Band boys, like true patriots, threw down their instruments, took up guns and went into the fight." and that "Two of their number, Wm. Purdy and E. Henry, were mortally wounded, and died from the effects of their wounds a short time after." Ironically this brave act that resulted in the loss of their instruments was to lead to their discharge after the battle when "On the 15th of April, a general order was issued to discharge all regimental bands, excepting one to each brigade." "Having no instruments, they were one of the first bands discharged, much to the regret of the whole Regiment."

On "Oct. 17th, After the discharge of our cornet band at Shiloh, efforts were made to make our drum corps more efficient, but it was not successfully carried out until it was placed under the leadership of George McMahon, after arriving here. From that time forward, at intervals on a march and on entering towns and cities, the band struck up some patriotic air, which always elicited a hearty cheer from the Regiment." This band was unofficial and is not specifically listed in the roster.

The Official Roster lists Edward V. Bretney, Frank M. Hundley, Isaac Leamon, John R. Leamon, Thomas J. Leamon, William B. Lang, Lewis V. Morrow, Bennett Munnell, William A. Pike, John H. Purdy, William T. Purdy, Henry Rayburn and Archibald Walker transferred from Company G.

John W. Antrim, George R. Achor and Elias M. Henry of Company D and Isaac E. Kintigh of Company F Join the 13 Company G men to make up the 17 on the roster of the Regimental Band.
